Dangerously Belated January Newsletter
This month, we released a podcast about a trend in sci-fi/fantasy fiction that we’re calling squeecore, and people lost their minds! But it also generated some interesting discussions and thoughtful criticism, and it has been a surreal delight seeing prominent writers talking about my work.
I have no idea if there is such a thing as squeecore as an overriding genre, but I do know most of the books that get pushed at me (I write for the Washington Post) tend to come with PR letters that emphasize fanfic terminology (shippable, etc), often position books in comparison
Listener @gynoidgearhead thoughtfully put together a transcription of the episode for the hearing impaired.
A brilliant essay on being-in-the-room privilege and who gets to speak for marginalized communities
A fierce “no thank you” to publishers’ attempts to wag the dog
A new Blood Knife piece about the failure of inspirational sci-fi
Please enjoy this song about Polish cannibal mermaids.
